Watch Coby White's brilliant defense on Joel Embiid in final seconds of Bulls' win
After scoring 24 points and flirting with a triple-double, Coby White's late defence on the reigning MVP gave the Chicago Bulls a win over the Philadelphia 76ers at Wells Fargo Arena on Monday.
Tyrese Maxey drew Nikola Vucevic and passed to Joel Embiid off the pick and roll with 10 seconds left in the fourth quarter as the Bulls led 106-104. White challenged Embiid's drive to the hoop by rotating to the help-side paint.
White threw his hands out to dispute the shot and then moved out of the way to avoid contact, throwing Embiid off-balance mid-air.
Post-play, NBC Sports Chicago Bulls color analyst Stacey King observed, "He thought there was going to be contact, and then he just loses the ball."
NBC Sports Chicago's postgame analysts Will Perdue and Kendall Gill praised White's ability to slide in on help-side without sending the 7-foot, six-time All-Star to the free throw line to tie the game.
Gill stated it was a non-statistic play. "He rotated defensively on perhaps two-time MVP Joel Embiid and changed his shooting.
He'll risk soreness the next day to help the team "Perdue remarked. There's a goods train coming down the alley. Coby got out of the way, but what he did made Joel Embiid doubt himself. He can run to the basket without Coby.
The game ended with Embiid scoring 40 points, grabbing 14 rebounds, and dishing out six assists, making it his 12th consecutive game with 30 points.
In addition to maintaining his career-long run of six straight 20-point games, Coby continued his scorching offensive play, finishing with nine assists and eight rebounds.
