Clara Schroth Lomady, 27, the team captain, set a record with six all-around titles at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships. 

Soviet gymnast Olga Korbut, 17, was a fan favorite at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Korbut won three gold medals and thrilling audiences with her stunts. 

She did the first backward somersault on the beam and back flip to catch on uneven bars at the Olympics. The latter move is now called the “Korbut Flip.”

Mary Lou Retton, 16, was the first non-Eastern European female gymnast to win all-around gold in 1984. After Comăneci's 1976 Olympics performance, Retton studied gymnastics.
