The 1794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar might be the most expensive coin ever sold, at least for the time being.

There are people who think it was the first silver dollar made by the U.S. Mint. The front has a profile of Lady Liberty with long hair, and the back has an American eagle.

Very few of these coins were ever made—less than 1,800—and an expert estimates that there are still between 120 and 130 left.

It was sold in 2011 for almost $7.4 million. The doubloon had Brasher's signature EB on the breast.

Coin World says that a private sale of another doubloon in 2018 that had the signature EB on the bird's wing sold for more than $5 million.

At the end of the 1800s, a gold and silversmith from New York City named Ephraim Brasher made the Brasher Doubloon.

In January 2021, a Brasher 2d coin sold for a record $9.36 million.
